Week 13 - Pre-final Critiques

This week we had our last critique before the final project is due.










Students shared new work and prototypes for their final books.

Next week we will welcome guest critic James Reddington for our critique of finished final projects.

HOMEWORK

  • DUE SUNDAY 5/13 at 11:59pm 5 documentation photographs of the completed book PLUS all digital images from the whole semester, due to your Google Drive folders the night before our last class. This is 5% of your final grade. Absolutely no late work or excuses will be accepted. Further details here.
  • Final Book Projects due in class

Week 12 - Critique for Final Projects

This week we had critiques for new work toward the final projects.



HOMEWORK


  • For anyone that did not already post 6 images to their blog, please be sure that you do before next week
  • The homework for next week has been slightly revised from what was originally stated in the syllabus and previous assignment materials (i.e. Final Project handout and 20 Photos Weekly handout) Please see this handout for more detailed information. Summary for next week you may bring in:
    • 20 new photos OR
    • All your selects for the final PLUS either
      • Significant work toward a prototype of materials for final book OR
      • Significant work showing the layout of your final book

Week 11 - Painting with Light and Critique

This week we worked in the studio using a technique called painting with light.













All images from our in class shoot can be found in this folder on Google Drive.


We also had a critique and check-in on progress for the final project.






HOMEWORK

  • Shoot and print another 20 images for your final
  • 6 images for your final project due to blog OR substantial prototype of material(s) for your final (i.e. some trial version for some aspect of the final book format, for example if you are going to be gluing or laminating try it out. If you will be printing on a certain paper or with a certain service try ordering a test print from them to see what it looks like.)

Week 10 - Critique

This week we got caught up on oral presentations, the midterm exam and quizzes.

Students presented new work making progress for their final projects.



I also shared a handout with more information about where to get prints or print-on-demand books made for the final.


HOMEWORK

  • 20-30 new prints due in class 
  • BLOG POST containing the following:
    • Final decision on book theme content
      • 3-6 sentence description of the content of the book
      • 3 images that show this content (these two should match)
    • A written proposal for how you will print, bind and format your book
      • 3-6 sentence description of book format 
      • If you will be sending away for a print-on-demand type of book please do research share detailed information on how long it will take for your book to be printed and shipped to you
      • 3 sketches/images showing how your book will be printed, constructed, bound and presented. These could be:
        • Hand or computer drawn sketches of what you want the finished book to look like
        • Reference images of other books made similarly

Week 9 - Oral Presentations and Sequencing Exercise

This week students gave oral presentations on photographers of their choosing.














We also did a sequencing exercise in class, experimenting with editing down a series of images and trying two different sequences.






EXHIBITIONS TO SEE

Brendan gave a great presentation on the work of Robert Mapplethorpe this week in class. There's a show of Mapplethorpe's work on display at Gladstone Gallery that is up until the end of the week.

Week 8 - Still Life

This week we discussed still life photography and looked at some examples.

This was our first week critiquing prints. We went over some general guidelines for critiquing work.


Students look at work by Jake and Andre.


HOMEWORK

  • Oral presentations are due next week 
    • Please come to class ready to present 
    • Bring 12 physical paper copies of your written component for the whole class 
    • I will have all digital versions of your slideshows loaded onto the teaching station from your digital materials (see below)
  • ALL DIGITAL MATERIALS for your oral presentation are due SUNDAY APRIL 8 BY 11:59PM to your Google Drive folder.  
    • Please locate the folder ahead of time leave and leave yourself extra time in case of any technical difficulties or questions.
  • The new assignment for this week is either another 20 photos toward your final project or 20 photos of a domestic still life
    • This assignment is due in two weeks on April 16.

Week 7 - Portraits

This week we gave an overview of the Final Project and looked at book examples.

Next we looked at some portraits by other photographers and then went into the studio to create our own.
